Here are some more information for Acrylic Painting:
Acrylic Painting

Acrylic canvas painting is a very interesting and satisfying art. As a hobby it can be fulfilling, remunerative and a skill to show off. For a talented painter it is an expression of emotion and a realization of self.

Furthermore, it has a quality which lends itself to versatility of designs and texture and hence can be done in any which way the painter wants. Acrylic paints are also easily painted on any material or surface and so can be used to lend individuality to gifts.

For a novice leaning to develop the art and hone the painting skills canvas paper is a good option since it is inexpensive. You can use acrylic, oil paint or water color to paint on canvas paper. Canvas paper is available in large "tear-off and use" pads and also in rolls which can be cut to the size you want. Canvas paper does not tear like ordinary paper and they are not brittle that they crack. Canvas paper can also be mounted and painted on, stapled or matted or kept under glass. Painting done on canvas paper is so good that sometimes you cannot make out the difference from paper and stretched canvas. However to a connoisseur's eye the difference will be obvious, so canvas paper can be used for acrylic canvas painting practice and you can shift to stretch canvas as you progress since this has longer life.

Canvas panels or boards: These are the first choice for beginners or painting learners and the main reason being that canvas boards are strong and economical. This painting surface is made of a cellulose product which is stiff and lined with cotton to prevent from tearing and primed with gesso which makes it painting friendly. Any medium of paint can be used on canvas boards such as oil paint, water color and acrylic paint. The surface is adaptable to all types of paints and reflects all colors and hues the way it is meant to be. Besides being economical canvas boards are thin and you can easily get frames and mattes to pin it up and paint on. However keep in mind that the quality of the canvas board has to be good, otherwise over a period of time the painting can get warped and this can be really heartbreaking for a person who has toiled to finish the painting.

Stretch Canvas: As you advance from a beginner to a professional you should also advance from canvas boards to stretch canvas. Stretch canvas has more cotton cloth and it is pulled tightly over a frame or wooden strips and then stapled and then painted on. Depending on the company from where you buy the frame the staples can be at the sides or the back. The canvas will be primed with gesso and depending on which medium of paint you are going to use you should choose the suitable canvas for acrylic painting uses. Canvas also has different grades such as portrait grade or rough finish grade. Canvas is also available with a border paining done which lends it a contemporary finish and need not be framed.

Making a Fine Art Painting - Which is Best, Acrylic Paint or Oil Paint?

Trying to decide which type of paint to use to paint your next art masterpiece? Should you go with the tried and true oil paints, or should you try the newer medium of acrylic paint? Each of these types of paints has their pros and cons which you should investigate so that you can choose the medium that suits your painting style. You are the artist, you make the call.

Oil paint, the traditional medium, is basically powder pigments mixed with clear linseed oil. This paint is slow drying and for that reason is perfectly suited for blending colors together smoothly with plenty of time to contemplate the painting's progress and still have time to edit and adjust the image before the paint dries. Another plus of oil paint is the luminous quality of the paint which is achieved from the linseed oil medium which allows light to pass through the paint and bounce thereby illuminating the paint on the surface. Additionally, oil paint has been proven to be the most permanent medium for fine art painting. Most paintings on canvas and wood were made with oil paint from early Renaissance times until the 1960's when acrylic paints were introduced.

Acrylic paint is only about fifty years old, and is the new kid on the block. This paint is made from powdered pigments and a liquid acrylic plastic medium. Unlike oil paint, acrylic dries fairly quickly and you will need to plan ahead and move quickly if you want to do much modeling or blending of colors with this type of artists paint. However, the quick drying quality of acrylic paint can be an advantage if you paint in layers or paint in such a way that does not require the blending or colors. You don't have to wait for several days for paint to dry before you paint something on top of a previous layer with acrylic. If you want to mix several mediums together, like acrylic drawing paper and found objects, then acrylics are the perfect type of paint for the job. There are also a wide variety of specialty paints and mediums that can be used with acrylics such as modeling paste for texture, gloss and matte mediums for thinning and mixing, iridescent and fluorescent paint, and many other special effect mediums and additives that could broaden the range of your creative artistic expression.

Some artists begin their paintings with acrylic paint and when that dries, they finish the artwork with oil paint. Hopefully, this will give you enough basic information to make an informed choice about what type of painting medium is most suited to your type of artistic expression.

How to best build up an acrylic painting?

I am painting a painting with acrylic paint for my wife's birthday. I have so far laid down a good base layer with foam rollers, using the paint at an opacity of about 80% (so there is still canvas showing through).
That has now dried well, and I am ready to add shadows and highlights.
Would it be best to put those on at full coverage, or should I leave some transparency?
Also, I'm toying with the idea of putting black lines on things to create a slightly comicbook type look in the end. What would I best use for that?

Unlike oils, acrylic paints are unlikely to separate or crack with thicker layers (unless you get carried away with impasto strokes of more than 1/2 inch thickness). Since you are thinking of making a comic book look to the painting, you may want to resist trying to blend a lot (which is hard with acrylics anyway because they dry so fast and don't re-dissolve in water). As for the lines, you might try a good artist-grade marker often used by illustrators and commercial artists. It would be much easier to control than using a brush, and the thickness of the line would be consistent as they are in comics. One good brand, I've found, is Berol Prismacolor. They are relatively lightfast and have two different sized tips on each marker. Generally, acrylics are not as suitable for transparent effects--they are by nature plastic. Watercolor is more of a transparent medium. One interesting effect you might try with acrylics, though, is to paint one opaque layer of color over another, and when dry, use a little rubbing alcohol on a rag to dissolve some of the top layer so that the underlying layer of color shows through.
Good luck!

Summer art program at Hilltop
The recent Summer Studio art program offered at Hilltop Country Day School gave the participants the opportunity to explore their imagination and learn a variety of techniques using acrylic paints on canvas. The children learned how to use color and different painting tools to create their canvases when painting a still life, a landscape or seascape and an abstract painting. For more information ...
